Muzvare Betty Makoni aged 46 (MSc in Social Work (Royal Holloway University, UK, BA General, BA Honours (University of Zimbabwe), ) and a Zimbabwean native and founder of Girl Child Network Worldwide has achieved so much in her life time and she is worth talking about.  She has achieved for others more than for herself. She has worked to uplift, empower, inspire and educate thousands of girls in Africa and round the world. From age 9, she grew up with a desire to turn girls in Zimbabwe-her home country into empowered confident women walking in the fullness of their potential and she just achieved that. Her work spread across the world and it has been replicated, studied, used to teach in schools and inspired millions across to do similar work. Girls from her girls’ movement continue to achieve as leaders in various parts of the world. Muzvare Betty Makoni did not succeed alone but with her are girls from poor rural and high density suburbs of Zimbabwe whose lives were transformed from victims to empowered women walking in the fullness of their potential.  Muzvare Betty Makoni`s career spans over 20 years as a gender activist and girl child rights champion.

Despite the challenges, persecutions, trials and tribulations, Muzvare Betty Makoni has not stopped her humanitarian work to rescue and protect the most vulnerable children wherever she sees them suffering. Blessings Ganyani
Publicity Secretary
Zimbabwe  Women Global Forum would like to thank Blessings Ganyani for giving time and resources in organising the conference. Blessings has been tasked to present a paper on health situation in Zimbabwe and help shape the way forward.

Blessings Ganyani (Bsc Hons in Mental Health,Bsc in Forensic Studies) is an experienced registered mental health practitioner with over 14 years of experience in both inpatient and community settings. Blessings’s career started in a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit PICU then she went on to work in the community mental health team and she also worked for the Inreach Team in the prison services and now she is currently  working with the First Episode Psychosis Team (PATH -psychosis prevention assessment and Treatment in the UK).

Blessings has a diverse background that includes being born and raised in Zimbabwe and coming to England in her late teens. Her love for caring began by working on the farm raising animals. Blessings’s heart and passion is not only in caring for others but assisting clients in transitioning to wellness using the recovery model which focuses on the patient being in control of their illness with support from mental health services.

When not involved with seeing clients in her practice she is often looking for ways to promote mental health in the community either through research or education. It is a lifelong dream of Blessings’s to see the stigma attached to mental health come to an end especially in Zimbabwe. Economic and social stressors are increasing the prevalence of mental health conditions. This means that for many Zimbabweans, mental health support is out of reach, either physically or financially. While clinical psychologists and psychiatrists are needed, task-shifting by training nurses and other non-specialised health workers to integrate mental health services into community settings will help to address this gap. Blessings’s passion for improving mental health services made her stand up and sign up as interim secretary in order to make a change by using  her knowledge, skills and personal attributes in giving back to the community that raised her and she is proud to be a part of.

Selina academic backgrounds include Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) International hospitality Management from University of Derby and Masters in Social Worker (M.A.) from University of Central Lancashire in the UK, Certificate in Social work and Diplomas in International hospitality Management from DMC hotel Training Centre in Zimbabwe.

Selina has 10 years’ experience within the social care field working with children and young adult disabilities, families, older adults and mental health settings. Selina has an additional 2 years Social Work experience working with Children with disability and Child Protection. This has developed her ability to perform needs led assessments as part of multi-disciplinary team supporting service user’s ambitions and goals. Skills and knowledge Selina has gained over the years, believe she can bring with her to make a difference including her tenacious attitude to commit herself to something, a friendly and approachable personality and an ever burning albeit slightly naïve desire to make a genuine difference as well as put something back into the system which has provided so much for me.

Selina Ruze was born in Zimbabwe and came to UK joining her family. She has always had a passion in making a difference .Selina’s reasoning behind deciding to pursue a career in social work stems from her seemingly innate desire to see others succeed in fulfilling their potential. Although it feels somewhat of a cliché, her passion and desire for the field of social work originate from a genuine wish to make a positive difference in people’s lives. Selina believe that though we are born completely dependent on others for all our care needs, as we grow, we develop a genuine sense of identity, creativity, autonomy and uniqueness which becomes completely our own. Every individual has the potential to provide something unique and beneficial to the community in which they are a part however, due to a variety of factors not everybody is able to make that contribution due to various barriers such as social oppression or exclusion. Selina believes in the principal of empowering members of the community to take action for themselves and fully integrate into society in which they wish to be a part of this being the main reason Selina has decided to be part of the Zimbabwe Women Global Forum, to assist in which every possible way to make a difference. Selina believes that an opportunity is all it takes to help someone to achieve their potential.
